The Consortium’s Activities

The Protection Consortium has been for almost ninety years a witness and protagonist of the technical, economic and human journey of the viticulture world of the Langhe.

ACTIVITIES

Management and Registration of Collective Trademarks, Market Surveillance Activities

The Consortium carries out checks on products sold on the market: it takes samples of wines in commerce and verifies their actual compliance, including analytically, with the requirements established by the respective production disciplinary regulations.

In response to the numerous attempts at plagiarism and usurpation of protected wine names that have occurred in recent years, at the beginning of 2008 the Consortium launched, with the support of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, a process aimed at creating a system of legally unimpeachable denomination safeguarding, also at the international level. The final step of this process is the registration of Barolo and Barbaresco as collective business trademarks in many countries of the world.

ACTIVITIES

Denomination
Management

The Consortium carries out careful regulatory compliance work to meet the needs of producers, lobbying for laws to support the protection and origin of wines and proposing any amendments to the Production Regulations. In collaboration with Universities and Research Institutes, the Consortium is engaged in studies and experiments both in the viticultural and oenological fields.

Management also covers the assessment of any changes to vineyard yields or the suitability of individual vintages, evaluating actions in agreement with the Piedmont Region, which may issue the necessary regulatory decrees. During the harvest season and in collaboration with other Professional Bodies such as ‘Vignaioli Piemontesi’ and trade associations, precise monitoring work on grape ripeness is carried out, helping producers in their decision-making and contributing to the maintenance of an archive of historical records that are important for knowledge of the sector. Another area of operation of great relevance concerns the definition and delimitation of production areas that are more restricted than the Denomination itself (the Additional Geographical Mentions, the MGAs).

ACTIVITIES

Data Collection, market Statistics and Assistance to member companies

This activity is carried out through data provided by the Certification Body Valoritalia and involves periodic publications for the benefit of both Wineries and the general and specialist Press. The precise collection of data provides, in fact, an indispensable support in choosing the most appropriate strategies to adopt in the management of the denominations and in promotion. The Consortium also offers its members a support service in the field of wine-growing regulations, from vineyard to bottle, regarding the regulatory obligations that wineries must address, as well as promptly communicating any changes.
