BARBERA
The Ancient Berry from
Monferrato
A dark-berried variety very widespread in Piedmont and of very ancient origin. It comes from the lands that were first the Marquisate and then the Duchy of Monferrato. Its strong adaptability to soil type and climate, its abundant production, the high yield of must and the richness of colouring matter encouraged farmers to plant Barbera vineyards and produce its wine. Its importance grew considerably at the end of the nineteenth century when it was recognised as a variety of strong vigour capable of resisting phylloxera, which had invaded and destroyed many vineyards.
In a short time Barbera became the quintessential Piedmontese grape and its wine the undisputed protagonist of peasant tables, a witness to everyday life on all the Piedmontese hills. The Barbera variety attests in an exemplary way to the singular fortune of the Langhe and Roero territory: to produce great age-worthy wines and at the same time to deliver emotions in younger wines.
Like Nebbiolo, Barbera also highlights in its characteristics the nature of the soil of origin and the soft and persuasive imprint of the calcareous-clay marls we call for brevity “the white lands”.
